Theun-Hinboun

Statkraft is part-owner of Theun-Hinboun Power Company (THPC) with its hydropower plants in the Bolikhamxay and Khammouane provinces of Laos.

Ownership: 20 %
Production: 3 TWh
Power: 500 MW

An extension to the original Theun-Hinboun power project from 1998 was completed in 2012 and inaugurated in January 2013. In total, the expansion doubled the power production to 3 TWh per year. Operation of the power plant is subcontracted to Statkraft.

A new dam makes it possible to store large volumes of water from the rain period for power generation in dry periods. The majority of the power is exported under long-term contracts through own power lines to Thailand, while a smaller share is distributed through the local Laotian grid.

Statkraft owns 20 per cent of THPC, while the Laotian energy company EDL Generation owns 60 per cent and Thai-based GMS Power 20 per cent.
