The Malpaso hydropower plant is located in the Paccha district in the region of Junin region, at 3,870 metres above sea level.

The plant makes use of water from the Mantaro river for power generation. Due to the proximity of the powerhouse to the Malpaso reservoir, where the water taken in from the Mantaro river is stored, the plant has the capacity to quickly increase or decrease the generation capacity based on requests and demands.

The plant is remotely operated from the dispatch center of Statkraft Peru in Lima.
