Wave- and tidal power

Our strategy within wave and tidal power is first to focus on tidal power and later use the knowledge and position gained from tidal power development to also develop wave power. Today, tidal power is technologically more developed than wave power, but as a sources of energy we see the biggest potential in wave power.
Tidal power is a new and highly promising renewable energy technology, in which Statkraft intends to be a major player. Through the development of potential expansion areas, technology advances and strategic partnerships, we are well equipped to take advantage of the growth we anticipate in tidal power.

Our activities in Tidal power

Thetis Energy Ltd

Statkraft owns 51 percent of Thetis Energy which is developing a large area off the coast of Northern Ireland with a view to the large-scale construction of tidal power plants.

Pentland Firth

Statkraft is among the licence applicants for the development of full-scale tidal power in the Pentland Firth off the North coast of Scotland. Licensing is under the auspices of the Crown Estate.

Atlantis Resources Corporation

Through a strategic investment, Statkraft is a minority owner in the technology and development company Atlantis Resources Corporation.

Hydra Tidal

Statkraft has a minority holding in the Norwegian technology company Hydra Tidal Energy Technology AS. Since 2002, the company has been working to develop a floating tidal power turbine.

Ocean Energy Research Programme

Statkraft is the instigator of the Ocean Energy Programme.
