Oil leakage at Kolsi Power Plant in Finland

The alarm of a fault at Kolsi Power Plant was raised on Thursday evening. Statkraft employees and Finnish Rescue Service teams then made their way to the power plant, where it became clear that two cubic metres of oil had leaked out into the watercourse. The power plant has three generators. The generator where the leakage occurred was taken out of operation as soon as the accident was discovered.

After assessing the conditions, the Finnish Rescue Service, which is leading the work to manage the leakage, decided not to lay out booms to gather up and then recover the oil from the water due to the fact that the oil’s thin consistency means it will evaporate and disappear over a short period of time.

“Statkraft is making all its resources available in connection with this accident. The most important thing in the initial stages is to assist the Finnish Rescue Service in their work. It is too early to say why this incident occurred. On Monday we will begin a more thorough investigation of the circumstances that resulted in the leakage and will subsequently start implementing the necessary improvement measures,” remarked CEO of Statkraft Suomi Oy, Per Nordlund.

There have been no reports of any harm to fish, birds or animals living in or by the watercourse.
