Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation projects

Statkraft is also engaged in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) under the Kyoto Protocol.

These mechanisms offer the possibility to invest in projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in countries having ratified the Kyoto-protocol. The emission reduction credits from these projects (CERs from CDM projects or ERUs from JI projects) can be used for compliance in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

In April 2005 Statkraft entered into its first agreement to become Project Participant in a CDM project. Statkraft acquired all CERs from a fuel switch project at Corobrik’s Lawley brick factory in the province of Gauteng, South Africa. The fuel switch from coal to gas is expected to lead to a reduction of 200,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions over a period of 10 year.

After having entered into the above first agreement, Statkraft currently manages a portfolio of several CDM/JI projects in various commercial stages. A diversified portfolio of projects with different host countries will lead to a reliable stream of CERs/ ERUs.
