Emission trading

Statkraft’s Emission Trading Team operates from the Amsterdam office. The natural CO2 positions resulting from Statkraft’s German gas fired power plants, which are now under construction, will also be managed from here.

Emission trading
Statkraft has been trading EU Allowances since early 2004. In 2004 and the beginning of 2005, the EU Allowance market focussed on forward contracts. During 2005 the transfer and delivery infrastructure came in place, allowing transactions of EUAs between registry accounts in all EU countries.

More and more countries opened their registries and completed their allowance allocations to industrial installations, resulting in a spot market to emerge. Spot deliveries have the advantage - relative to forward contracts - of reduced counterparty risk and hence spot deliveries open the CO2 market also to smaller companies. With new parties entering the marketplace during 2005 and 2006, the traded volumes increased significantly.

Statkraft is a member of the Powernext, EEX and NordPool CO2 exchanges. We also clear on the ECX.
