Renewable energy

“Statkraft is all about environment friendly energy, a vital area in Europe’s energy future”

The European Union has set ambitious goals in fighting global warming and reducing dependency from limited energy sources.  Binding targets are set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop renewable energy sources. 20 percent of EU energy consumption must come from renewable sources by 2020, compared to 6.4 % in 2004

Renewable energy production
Statkraft is the largest European generator of electricity based on renewable energy sources. We have considerable experience in the development of renewable energy and will as such play a role in meeting the future targets.

Renewable energy certificates
Renewable energy certificates represent the environmental attributes of the electricity produced from renewable energy sources such as water, wind and biomass. The renewable energy certificates are usually called RECS certificates (Renewable Energy Certificate System) or Guarantees of Origin. They can be sold separately from the underlying commodity, electricity. This is done by suppliers and individual consumers to ‘green up’ their electricity mix. For suppliers, the purchase of renewable energy certificates is a way of differentiating themselves from other suppliers with a less green portfolio. Consumers purchase renewable energy certificates to support their sustainable corporate image as part of their corporate social responsibility. As a consequence of the rising customer demand for green energy, the sales of renewable energy certificates can help make investment in renewable energy more attractive.

Statkraft sells renewable energy certificates from various production sources, such as large scale hydro facilities, small scale hydro facilities, wind farms. Another qualification of renewable energy certificates is the age of the power plants, resulting in certificates from newer production sources being more valuable than certificates from longer existing power plants. Statkraft also sells specific renewable energy ‘labels’, such as the German OK-Power and TÜV certified power. Furthermore we sell the environmental attibutes into national support systems such as UK-ROCs,  UK-LECs and the Swedish El-certs.
