Statkraft is currently involved in 9 wind farm projects in the UK, and the London office is the Statkraft Group’s spearhead for further business opportunities in the UK.

Statkraft UK Ltd is a subsidiary of Statkraft AS. The office was opened in January 2006 and the company established in March 2006. The office is located in Hammersmith in London.

The UK in itself, as well as the organisation of the electrical system, is favourable for renewable energy. All major political parties show a long term commitment to renewable energy, something that has resulted in the continued support for the Renewable Obligation Certificate system (ROC).  The ROC system makes wind farms feasible and has led to a vast number of sites in planning across the UK. Scotland and coastal areas around the kingdom have the best wind speeds, comparable to the wind speed in coastal areas of Norway. 

The power market in the UK is well developed, but with huge challenges for the coming years. With a predominantly thermal generation mix (Coal, Natural Gas and Nuclear), a declining production of Natural Gas and a scheduled near term closure of several coal and nuclear plants, the security of supply is very much on the political agenda. The efforts in renewable energy are crucial in this picture, but not a full solution. Additional opportunities will open up in this market, and Statkraft with it’s London office is constantly monitoring the market for such opportunities.
