Business areas in brief

Statkraft’s vision is to be a European leader in environment-friendly energy. Backed by over a century of knowledge and investment, we are well situated for further growth and development, and we are dedicated to creating lasting value. We contribute to sustainable development financially, environmentally and socially.

The Statkraft Group is the second largest European producer of electricity based on renewable energy sources. We are the third largest power producer in the Nordic region, and the largest power producer in Norway. We generate around 42 TWh of electricity each year, which represents one-third of Norway’s hydropower production.

Including the regional companies Trondheim Energi and Skagerak Energi, the group has some 1,920 full-time employees (equivalent). These include professionals in a number of disciplines, primarily engineering and business. The group also boasts dynamic professional environments in areas such as environmental expertise, hydrology and IT, as well as in the three key group functions, including Organisation and Communications.

The group also owns shares in the Norwegian energy utilities Bergenshalvøens Kommunale Kraftselskap (BKK) and Agder Energi, which are part of the Statkraft Alliance. In addition, we have shareholdings in Sydkraft (Eon Sverige), Fjordkraft, Naturkraft, Småkraft and Statkraft Norfund Power Invest. The latter owns shares in power plants in several parts of the world.

With effect from 1 October 2004 Statkraft was reorganised from a state-owned enterprise to a limited company. The reorganisation resulted in a new corporate structure that became effective from the start of 2005.

The new corporate structure will increase focus on development in each of the three business areas: Generation & Markets, New Energy, and Regional. The employees in each business area shall create a foundation for the development of specialist competence and the realisation of economies of scale on the group level.

Generation & Markets
The business area Generation & Markets has a unique business concept developed over many years by Statkraft in which it creates added value and reduces risk exposure by means of power optimisation and financial hedging. Operational and maintenance activities are tailored to make the most of market opportunities identified through analysis of underlying trends. Through the business area Statkraft trades in energy products on the Nordic power exchange as well as on a number of Continental power exchanges.

New Energy
The business area New Energy is the Statkraft Group’s centre of competence for the development of new power generating facilities and the follow-up of Statkraft’s investments in non-regulable generating assets, such as wind power facilities. The business area will ensure that the development of new and profitable forms of environment-friendly energy is given the necessary focus and priority. It will also contribute to the establishment of a dynamic environment for R&D and innovation within the group.

Regional
The Regional business area primarily consists of Statkraft’s substantial shareholdings in the Statkraft Alliance companies. The main objective of the business area is to achieve a satisfactory rate of return on investments and to further develop the group’s subsidiaries and associated companies, which operate power distribution grids, and engage in end-user sales and district heating and broadband activities.

We work continually to mobilise the potential that lies in the Statkraft Group’s human resources, nurture a healthy corporate culture, better exploit IT as a strategic resource, and increase the general public’s confidence in the group.

Welcome to one of Norway’s fastest growing companies
