Wind power certificates

Wind power is one of the most environmentally friendly sources of energy for large-scale electricity production. Statkraft operates wind farms at Smøla and Hitra in Norway.

The environmental benefits of wind power and Wind power certificates are exactly the same. The only difference between these two products is the way the customer purchases them.

In a Wind power certificate transaction, electricity and its corresponding environmental benefits are separated. Businesses and individual private residences choose the number of Wind Power Certificates they would like to purchase and pay the fixed annual fee. The power is sold generically to the power grid and the environmental benefits are passed on to the customer.

There is considerable potential for the construction of wind power facilities in Europe, particularly in coastal areas and offshore. The best available wind resources are found in Norway and the UK. In a 10–15 year perspective, wind power generation in Norway could be expanded to an estimated 10–15 TWh.

Statkraft's commitment to wind power has been a major contributor in raising the level of competence in and insight into wind power technology. Participation in an R&D project on the large-scale integration of wind power, under the auspices of the Norwegian Research Council, has provided a greater understanding of component development, local wind conditions and problems relating to the grid.

The wind-power commitment is also in line with Statkraft’s vision of becoming a European leader in environmentally friendly energy.
