Environment-friendly operations

Environment-related work is carried out across the entire organization and value chain, from development, via production and trading, to distribution and power sales.

Development of new energy production; The environment is one of several factors that is investigated and assessed in projects for new power and heat generation capacity. Statkraft places an emphasis on thorough and professionally well-founded processes that highlight all consequences relating to development projects, including taking account of and working in close collaboration with all stakeholders.

Statkraft is a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment and the International Hydropower Association. Both institutions provide Statkraft with
important impulses in respect of environmental performance
optimisation initiatives both in Norway and abroad.  As one of the first power generation companies in the world, Statkraft has also adopted  International Hydropower Association’s Sustainability Guidelines and Assessment Protocol as compulsory tools in all new hydro power projects. This entails a standardized measurement of the projects’ sustainability performance.

Energy production; Environmental work in daily operation of hydro power plants, regulated areas, wind farms, gas-fired power plants and district heating plants include:

  1. Environmental measures in rivers and reservoirs
  2. Research projects in collaboration with research institutions
  3. Follow-up of licence requirements and key environmental aspects
  4. Environmental reporting
  5. Continuous improvement

Distribution
The Statkraft Group owns and operates regional grids. Environmental considerations and safety are integrated in the planning, building and operation of the transmission network, transformation stations and other equipment that make up the grid.

Trading and sales
Statkraft trades in European climate quotas (EU Allowances) and participates in projects for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (Clean Development Mechanism/Joint Implementation). The Group also sells voluntary carbon quotas to the business market in Norway, and has extended this product offering to the private market in 2008.

A number of schemes and mechanisms connected with customers’ willingness to pay for renewable energy have been established in recent years. Certificates issued by independent certification bodies via RECS (Renewable Energy Certificate System) are one example of this type of scheme.
