At international level, we also have the Kyoto Protocol, with clear targets for reductions in climate-gas emissions for most of the developed countries for the period 2008-2012. Negotiations are underway on new targets for the period post-2012. The project-based mechanisms ensuing from the Kyoto Protocol, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI), tie in nicely with the EU ETS. Emissions reductions realised in countries having ratified the Kyoto Protocol can be used for compliance in the EU ETS.
