Firing up the Herdecke gas turbine

The gas turbine at the Herdecke power plant had its “First Fire” at the end of May. This was an important milestone, and marked the start of the test period (known as “hot commissioning”). Herdecke thus became the ﬁrst of Statkraft’s gas-ﬁred power projects to reach this milestone.

Less than one year after the foundation stone was laid down, many of the hi-tech components are in place at the gas-fired power plant in Knapsack. Two gas turbines and one steam turbine have been transported from the factories in Berlin and Mühlheim along the Rhine to Knapsack, just outside Cologne in Germany. Around 80 per cent of the building work is now complete..

Statkraft yesterday celebrated a topping-out ceremony together with 450 construction workers at the gas-fired power plant in Knapsack near Cologne.Nine months after the laying down of the foundation stone, the power plant buildings have been completed and are now ready for the installation of the large gas and steam turbines.The cutting-edge plant with a generating capacity of 800 MW will give the Statkraft Groupaccess to its own, flexible power production in Continental Europe.

Manufacturing of Statkraft’s very first gas turbine was recently completed at the factory in Berlin. The supplier, Siemens, invited the customer to witness loading the 310 tonnes of steel on board the boat that will be transporting the turbine to Knapsack outside Köln.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on 16 September to mark the start of construction of the new gas-fired power plant at Herdecke in Germany.
