Statkraft behind WindSea – the next generation floating wind power plant

WindSea, a joint enterprise between Statkraft, NLI Innovation and FORCE Technology, will today launch the next generation of floating wind power plant. The WindSea triple turbine will help overcome some of the most important challenges of wind power production offshore.

Since 2005 an average of 4-5 sea eagles have been found dead at Statkraft’s Smøla Wind Farm each year. Although the sea eagle population is not under threat an extensive research programme has been initiated to find out how the losses can be minimised.

A positive view of living close to wind farms

Nearly three out of four people living close to major wind power facilities have a positive opinion of their local wind farm, according to the results of an opinion poll conducted by Statkraft in three regions with wind power facilities. 


Celebrations at 71 degrees north latitude

The village of Kjøllefjord was hung with flags, the shops closed for the occasion and the sports hall decked out to receive hundreds of guests on Tuesday, when Statkraft officially opened its wind farm at Gartefjell. Add to that the fact that many of the visiting dignitaries arrived via the famous Norwegian Coastal Voyage (Hurtigruta), and it was a truly unforgettable experience.

Smøla Wind Farm has been in the news a lot recently, but in the ongoing debate about wind power in Norway not all claims are equally truthful. Power generation levels at Europe’s largest land-based wind farm are as anticipated, and systematic research is being carried out into the relationship between sea eagles and windmills.

Since Phase 2 of the Smøla Wind Farm opened in September 2005, nine sea eagles have died after colliding with turbine rotor blades.
