At Statkraft, we want to reduce the negative environmental impacts of our energy production. We work on understanding the consequences of our activities, and use our knowledge to implement environmental measures.
On many occasions, we have imposed restrictions on our activities, in order to reduce our environmental impact. This may be out of concern for biological diversity, leisure facilities or for aesthetic reasons.
How do we do this?
Statkraft is certified to ISO 14001 – Environmental management. This means that we have established a system to ensure the management and monitoring of factors that affect the external environment.
We perform internal reviews and environmental inspections of all power plants as part of day-to-day operations and maintenance. Statkraft monitors the external environment by having environmental plans as part of major maintenance work, and upgrading and expansion projects.
Hydropower generation causes minimal emissions and discharges and generates little waste. We nonetheless maintain accounts of oil and other hazardous products we use and improve our oversight by developing routines. These accounts allow us to track environmentally hazardous products from acquisition through to disposal. The aim is to monitor our use of such chemicals.
Leisure activities
Statkraft has a designated project for improving regulated watercourses. More than 50 voluntary measures are aimed at enhancing facilities for angling, recreation and the natural recruitment of fish. The projects include:
A new bridge over the Leirbotn river
Restoration of the cultural landscape along the Øyres river
Release of large trout in Lake Totak
Preventing the spread of pike along the Telemark Canal
Fish
Statkraft works actively to ensure thriving fish populations in regulated watercourses. We operate fish hatcheries and gene banks and our aim is for reservoirs and watercourses to have stocks that are self-recruiting and in sound natural equilibrium. Our fish projects include:
Release of salmon smolt in rivers
Egg planting in River Vikja
Spawning gravel for salmon in the Bjoreio river
Cleaning of Røssvatn lake
