Winning on innovation: game-changing hybrid power in Brazil

Picture this: it’s 2024, and your company has just begun operating the largest wind farm outside Europe in its history. Even as the turbines have just begun their maiden rotations, an idea is already percolating: could this site do even more? The answer is that it can, and the solution is hybridisation.

Brazil as a renewable powerhouse 

The wind plant in this case is Ventos de Santa Eugenia, fourteen wind farms totalling some 91 turbines. Annually, the site is capable of generating enough power for up to 1.7 million Brazilian homes.  

And the ‘more’?  

That arrives a year later in the shape of an integrated solar farm, Santa Eugênia Solar Complex, supercharging the existing site into a hybrid power heartland with a combined generation capacity of 682 MW. Located in the state of Bahia, straddling the municipalities of Uibaí and Ibipeba, the hybrid plant is harnessing not just some of the finest solar and wind conditions in Brazil: they are some of the best in the world.  

Brazil itself is a major engine in the region’s transition (according to Ember, Latin America and the Caribbean generated 65% of its electricity from clean sources in 2025. That is 22% above the global average), evinced by milestones such as solar outpacing fossil fuel generation for the first time in 2025.

What’s so special about hybrid power plants? 

An obvious answer to this question would be, ‘Same site, more power’.  

But dig a little deeper and we see the potential not to just generate more energy from the same place, but also big benefits for national grids. Brazil is not alone in facing challenges with transmitting energy efficiently through its grid, making hybrid projects critical for ensuring a more reliable energy supply to the country, as they help balance variable renewable generation while maximising the use of existing grid infrastructure. 

Equally, projects like this are tangible rebuttals to the challenge of solar and wind intermittency. Ultimately, the presence of both weather-based technologies goes a long way to address the challenges of variable production and ensure stable power supply.

And let’s not overlook the efficiency gains: hybrid sites reduce infrastructure needs and land use while simultaneously maximising the area’s renewable energy potential. 

Santa Eugenia isn’t finished innovating just yet 

There is, though, another chapter in Santa Eugenia’s renewable power story. In April 2026, the project became the first in Brazil to receive authorisation from the Agência Nacional de Energia Elétrica (ANEEL) for a co-located energy storage system. Once operational, the batteries will be able to store excess energy from wind and solar generation on site and then send this energy to the grid when needed.
