Stationary energy storage
These systems store solar and wind energy when supply is high and release it when demand increases. This helps stabilize the grid and reduce electricity prices. Pumped hydro and BESS are core to Statkraft, but we’re exploring new markets and lower-cost solutions.

Project: Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES)

This initiative aims to deploy long-duration energy storage projects that can store energy for hours to days, ensuring a continuous and reliable energy supply.
As energy systems get an increasingly higher share of renewables, more energy must be shifted from generation peaks to lows. Statkraft is developing LDES projects in many of the markets where we are present, including Great Britain, Germany, and Ireland.
We are technology agnostic, aiming to use the most suitable solution for each use-case. Statkraft is exploring a range of technologies within electrochemical, mechanical, and thermal energy storage.
Our activities include project partnerships, collaboration on technology performance validation, participation on pilot projects, and cooperation with technology providers. We are seeking to get in touch with project developers, technology providers, and experts for this initiative.

Project: Distributed Storage

The Distributed Flexibility Project focuses on exploring how Statkraft can create value from distributed flexibility sources in a future energy system that is connected and utilizes a mix of flexible resources.
We are maturing this project to position ourselves in a growing and changing flexibility market and address the challenges of grid instability, constraints and cost optimization. Distributed storage solutions can help manage energy supply more effectively and support the transition to renewable energy sources.
Our activites include pilot projects, participating in new business models and collaboration with experts and innovative companies.
We are looking for partners with expertise in relevant energy storage technologies, grid management, demand response and renewable energy integration to collaborate on this project.

Project: Thermal Energy Storage (TES)

By leveraging Thermal Energy Storage (TES), the TES Project focuses on electrification of industrial heat to decarbonize industrial processes and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Today, industrial heat is primarily generated by burning natural gas in gas boilers and accounts for a significant portion of global CO2 emissions.
By pursuing TES projects and providing power optimisation services for TES applications, Statkraft supports TES technology development, decarbonisation of industrial heat and promotes sustainable industrial practices.
Statkraft is actively expanding our TES footprint and are seeking strategic partnerships with thermal energy storage technology providers and project developers, with the goal of developing a portfolio of commercially viable TES projects.
As a leading renewable energy company with sophisticated energy trading, management and optimisation capabilities, we are exploring new business- and funding models to enhance scalability and improve the TES value proposition our industrial customers.

Project: Wind blade recycling
Search field: Sustainable value chains
This project aims to enhance sustainability and circularity in wind energy by focusing on the lifecycle management of wind turbines and blades.
This includes the recycling and repurposing of turbine components to minimise waste and environmental impact. Historically, most wind turbine blades have ended up in landfills, contributing to environmental pollution.
In this project, we aim to promote a circular economy within the wind energy sector, reduce waste, and support sustainable energy practices. Our activities include piloting new concepts, collaboration with end-of-life experts, and the implementation of innovative recycling technologies.
We are seeking partners who are leaders in recycling technologies and/or other relevant end-of-life activities for onshore wind assets. We also want to connect with other industry peers or third parties focusing on the broader circularity within wind.
