The power of partnerships:
Statkraft and Cemex
Building materials producer Cemex in Poland has signed a 365 PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) with Statkraft for the delivery of renewable energy. The agreement covers 30% of the company’s electricity consumption and will help reduce emissions in one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries.
Cemex partnership with Statkraft began with an initial PPA in Spain that later expanded to Poland, where the company operates two cement plants, a grinding station in Gdynia and several dozen other production facilities across Poland including concrete plants and aggregates quarries. The production of cement is associated with significant CO₂ emissions.
”We operate in an industry that accounts for up to 8% of global emissions. As one of the world’s leading companies, we feel obligated to change this”, says Włodzimierz Chołuj, CEO of Cemex in Poland.
To support this ambition, Cemex has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with Statkraft that secures access to renewable electricity throughout the year. The power will cover 30% of the company’s electricity demand in Poland over the next eight years.
”We are a frontrunner when it comes to alternative energy use. Here, we were the first to use fuel derived from waste in our production processes, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Thanks to Statkraft, we can further increase the share of renewables in our energy mix”, says Jacek Nowosad, Head of Low Carbon Energy and Green I&D Cement Operation & Technology, EMEA, at Cemex in Poland.

Cement with green ambitions
Cemex’s plant in Chełm is a flagship for sustainable cement production. Here, the company first introduced alternative fuels based on waste to reduce the use of fossil energy sources. The plant is among the most advanced in the group when it comes to energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions.
“Statkraft is a leading provider of PPAs in Europe, developing solutions tailored to the customer’s specific needs. Since January 2025, our cooperation has enabled Cemex to source its energy demand with renewable power all year round”, says Kornel Koronowski, Head of Origination at Statkraft Poland.
“This is not only a climate initiative. It is about safeguarding the competitiveness of our customers in a rapidly changing industry" he adds.
What is the 365 PPA?
A 365 Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a tailored energy procurement solution that combines different renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, to match an industrial company's specific demand profile throughout the year. This innovative approach ensures a consistent and reliable energy supply, in alignment with the company's unique consumption patterns.
Efficient by Nature: 365 days of smart energy
The magic of a 365 PPA lies in the combination of technologies. By leveraging a mix of solar panels and wind turbines, it optimizes real-time coverage of energy demand, significantly reducing the hours and volume of oversupply. How so? Solar panels generate energy during daylight hours and are particularly productive in summer, while wind turbines compensate at any time, including cloudy days, and typically have their highest production in winter. This synergy ensures that energy needs are met efficiently, throughout 365 days a year.

Since January 2025, the cooperation with Statkraft has enabled Cemex to supplement its energy needs with renewable power throughout the year.
The electricity delivered directly to Cemex's production facilities and will cover 30 % of the company's power consumption in Poland for the next 8 years.

Such PPAs are central to Statkraft's strategy for supporting the green transition. They enable companies to take responsibility, reduce emissions and secure predictability in a volatile energy market.

A long-term partnership
As Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy, Statkraft plays an important role in supporting energy-intensive industries transition to more sustainable operations through the procurement of renewable energy. For large industrial customers such as Cemex, this strengthens energy security, reduces emissions and supports the development of new renewable capacity.
“Statkraft’s success is inseparable from the competitiveness of our customers. Our PPAs are designed to give heavy-industry operators the resilience and market edge they need, shielding them from energy-market volatility while accelerating their transition to low-carbon operations. Our agreements not only support sustainability ambitions but also enable measurable progress toward Scope 2 targets, reinforcing their long-term business strength." says Kornel Koronowski, Head of Origination at Statkraft Poland.
On the road to net zero
Cemex has received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for several of its cement, concrete and aggregates products, underlining the company’s environmental focus. The agreement between Statkraft and Cemex demonstrates how collaboration between energy producers and heavy industry can deliver real emission cuts – without compromising economic viability. It brings together three key values: green energy, stable prices and industrial competitiveness.
For Cemex, this agreement is one element of a broader strategy. The company aims to reduce its total CO₂ emissions by 47% by 2030 and to reach net zero by 2050. The cooperation with Statkraft is a key enabler, and Cemex Poland CEO Włodzimierz Chołuj, is proud of the solution they have developed together:
”The market we operate in is changing fast. We need to act responsibly and think long term. Together with Statkraft, we are proving that green industry is not just possible – it is already happening” he concludes.
