Kungsbacka district heating plant

Sweden / District heating / Power plant

Ever since the 1980s, district heating in Kungsbacka has been developed in the central parts of the municipality. Today a distribution network of 79 kilometres supplies approximately 2,000 customers with heating and cooling.

  • 2002
    Entered into operation
  • 97 MW
    Installed capacity
  • 139.1 GWh
    Annual production

The plant was expanded several times in the 2000s, and today we are proud of the fact that the plant is 100 per cent powered by bioenergy. We have succeeded in removing all fossil fuels and now provide production based solely on renewable biofuels.

Kungsbacka has two incineration plants. A separate reserve and peak load facility is located in Borgås on the north side of the city. The facility has a biofuel boiler that burns wood chips when the weather is very cold or if the main plant has to be shut down, e.g. for maintenance work. Kungsbacka's large plant is located on Hammargård's industrial area just south of the city. The plant has two large biofuel boilers for wood chips. There are also four smaller reserve boilers that can be started quickly if the need arises. Statkraft also offers remote cooling to customers in Kungsbacka. Cooling production is also located at Hammargård.

Thanks to fossil-free production, the environmental impact from the Kungsbacka plants is minimal. Due to modern cleaning methods, emissions of dust, nitrogen and sulphur are also minimised. Ash residue is returned to the forest as it is important that the nutrients in the ash benefit the forest anew. That way we complete the cycle.

Year built: 2002, 2003 and 2014
