A district heating plant that uses bio-energy sourced from the local area has been built inside the grounds of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) in Ås. The heating plant produces 99.8 per cent renewable energy.

There is a roughly 5.5-kilometre-long district heating network installed through the NMBU campus, down through the centre of Ås and on to Ås middle school. In addition, Statkraft has acquired around 1.5 kilometres of existing district heating network at NMBU.

NMBU's buildings and several public and private buildings in Ås town centre are connected to the district heating network. The district heating plant may also be used by the university for teaching and research activities.
